Skipper joined us about halfway through 2018.  When he first arrived I was not expecting to see a ribby-hip-protruding-zero-topline guy walk off the trailer.  We immediately put together a plan to slowly and steadily get weight on Skipper, especially before winter hits (and we all know that gives us until about October….).

There were about 4 months to fatten him up.  We switched this 20 year old to a senior grain which was loaded with protein and fiber and started to throw hay at him.  It was definitely a slow process.  We didn’t want to completely overload him all at once but the results definitely began to make their appearance.

Skipper isn’t even a hard keeper!  Now that he’s back to a healthy weight he gets the same amount of hay and grain as everyone else.  It’s amazing the difference that quality and appropriate forage makes!

I wish there was a better ‘before’ shot to really show how far he’s come but it’s still pretty clear that he’s super healthy now.  Skipper now has that pep back in his step!
